The NTA and Safari Club International have teamed up to host both a Master Measurers and an Official Measurers Seminar at the 2008 Annual National Taxidermists Association Convention.  If you have ever been interested in learning how to score animals from all over the world or believe in the conservation efforts of SCI we welcome you to attend.
 

The cost to attend this year's Official Measurers Seminar is $100.00, which includes a one-year national membership to SCI. Also included is an Official Measurers Kit including measuring tools, measurer's manual, score sheets, Official Measurers certification test, and a lifetime of SCI Official Measurers updates to our measurers program. The seminar is three hours in length on Saturday afternoon and gives you all the tools and information needed to begin scoring trophies today.  Become a measurer for Safari Club International and become active in our hunting heritage. 

The Master Measurers seminar is only available at the National SCI convention in Reno. However, SCI is offering this course at the NTA convention in Lubbock, Texas! The cost to attend the Master Measurers seminar is $100.00 and requires each participant to score 25 provided animals within 3% accuracy within the allotted period of time.  Measuring materials and one-year membership will NOT be included in the cost of the seminar as you are already a member by being a certified official measurer and having a measuring kit. Please bring your measuring kit with you to this seminar.  Measuring kits will be available for purchase if attendees do not have the proper equipment.  It is also required, anyone attending the Master Measurers Seminar be current members of SCI and have already become a Certified Official Measurer before attending the course. This will begin with a 3-hour classroom seminar on Thursday morning 8:30-11:30.  Following this, you must measure the 25 animals provided in the classroom.  Classroom hours will be Thursday 12:00-4:00 PM; Friday 8:30-4:00; and Saturday morning 8:00-11:00.  Registration will be available in 2008. Reproduction Horns & Antlers

Have you ever wondered how to prepare and assemble realistic reproduction horns and antlers? Come watch Dave Hale, (a definite noted expert in this field), as he builds trouble free horns and antlers. Dave is one of the foremost “architects of replica antlers” and will guide you step by step through the process.Dave will demonstrate how this is easily incorporated into repairing antler tines and broken horns. Bondo Ear Techniques

Instructors:Paul & Vincent Gallegos

Paul and Vincent Gallegos are brothers who hail from Santa Fe, New Mexico, both certified NTA judges and Award of Excellence recipients. This dynamic duo will be presenting a seminar using the Bondo ear method which can be incorporated into both your competition and commercial mounts.  Paul & Vincent will demonstrate the process for large ears such as kudu and mule deer as well as smaller ears such as bobcat and squirrels.  They will also discuss the money making advantages of using the Bondo ear method as compared to other methods.

Beginner Seminar –Hands On Whitetail Mounting (Part 1 of 3)

Instructor: Evelyn “Superpig” Mills

This seminar is geared towards the beginning taxidermist in the early stages of learning how to produce a good-looking commercial mount without making the typical beginner mistakes.. This seminar will be presented in three separate sessions. The first session will be Wednesday night and includes cape preparation and form preparation.  The second and third sessions will be held Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon will consist of setting antlers and eyes, mounting the deer and grooming.

 

Participants of this three part seminar must supply their own WT deer cape (tanned or dry-preserved), WT mannikin, antlers, eyes, glue, mounting stand, 6’x6’ plastic tarp, and other necessary mounting tools and supplies such as ear liners, Bondo, clay, and sewing needle. Please have your capes test fit to the form to ensure proper fit, as form alteration will not be covered in great detail due to time restraint. In order to provide the best lesson for each participant, the class will be limited to 12 students with pre registration required.

Mounting Waterfowl

It is with a heavy heart that the NTA informs the membership of the passing of one of our own. Longtime NTA member and life member, Dave Cowley of Oklahoma has passed away. Dave is best known for his unique style of bird taxidermy and his one of a kind personality.He was on schedule for Wednesday night at the NTA Convention in Lubbock, this summer and was very excited about donating a bird seminar.

Dave Cowley was an extremely friendly person, and all of our taxidermy friends are sorry to see him go.Anyone that knew Dave can easily remember seeing him in action at past conventions.He was fun to be around. One of things we can all remember about Dave was his smile…it was larger than life. 

Dave leaves behind his wife, and numerous family members along with a host of taxidermy family.Dave’s death is but a reminder that we will all walk that same trail one day.The NTA grieves with Dave’s family.May our Heavenly Father comfort them with His love, and may it bring them strength to know His house above is a house of many mansions free from pain and sorrow.
